How to Maximize Your Learning Style

People used to think that our talents are better than others have, or we are inferior compared to our peers, especially during studying years. But recent research has shown the individual learn in various ways, and the one size fits all educational system does not really cater to all learners. Here are the types of learning styles based on the multiple intelligence theory and how you maximize these learning styles.

Learning Styles and the Brain

Learning styles have so much power compared to what people have initially realized. It can guide the way one knows one’s potential and possibilities. It can change the way a person absorbs information, recall memories, and experiences life.

According to studies, each learning style focuses on a different part of the brain. By involving more parts of the brain when learning, remembering the things being studied becomes much better. In fact, researchers are now utilizing brain imaging technologies to identify which part of the brain is being used depending on each learning style.

  1. Visual – The visual sense is managed by the occipital lobes toward the back of the brain. For spatial orientation, the occipital lobes share this with the parietal lobes.
  2. Auditory – The aural content is handled by the brain’s temporal lobe. Music, in particular, can be processed in the right temporal lobe.
  3. Verbal – The left hemisphere of both the frontal and temporal lobes specialize in language and verbal learning.
  4. Physical – Kinesthetic learning is handled by the motor cortex and cerebellum of the brain.
  5. Logical – Logical thinking is driven by both parietal lobes, and even more by the left one.
  6. Social – The temporal and frontal lobes handle most of our social knowledge and activities. Also, the limbic system manages a person’s mood, emotions, and aggression.
  7. Intrapersonal – Like social learning, solitary learning also involves the limbic system and the frontal lobe. It also is linked with the parietal lobe.

Maximizing Each Learning Style

  1. Visual

Spatial or visual learners are good at deciphering data from maps and graphs. They excel in geometry, but they struggle with numbers in general. Though these learners are a bit late in writing and reading, they think outside of the box, and they have rich imaginations. These people usually use phrases like “show me,” and they typically perform tasks better when they see the final output first.

For better visual learning, do the following:

  • Use digital tools and technology.
  • Create outlines and highlight or color-code books to organize the materials.
  • Use graphs and charts.
  • Use infographics and diagrams.
  • Use flashcards for reviewing.
  1. Verbal

On the other hand, verbal learners are skilled in speaking, listening, and writing. They have a way with words and an excellent memory of all things written. Verbal learners love speech, drama, and writing classes.

For better verbal learning, do the following:

  • Use acronyms and mnemonics for faster memorization and recall.
  • Use rhymes, tongue twisters, and puns for a fun learning experience.
  • Create word games to entice interest.
  1. Logical

Learners that are skilled in logic enjoy mathematics and rational reasoning. These individuals are quick in solving problems that involve numbers and also love answering abstract types of examinations. Logical thinkers enjoy classification, writing down lists, and forming cause and effect relationships.

For better logical learning, do the following:

  • Play strategy board games like chess.
  • Go through research and extract essential information like statistics and lists.
  • Design your own strategic games.
  • Stimulate the mind by solving brain teasers and playing computer games.
  1. Auditory

Musical or audio learners can process sounds faster compared to processing images. They perform better in chronological processes, and they think the same way. Auditory learners have a great memory, strong language skills, and exceptional in oral recitations. They are also musically inclined and enjoy notes, tones, and rhythms.

For better auditory learning, do the following:

  • Listen to music while you go over learning materials.
  • Use rhymes and jingles for easier memorization.
  • Invest in high-quality headphones and earphones, record learning materials, and play them back when you review.
  • Invest in microphones for recording material that you can play later.
  1. Social

This kind of learner has unique abilities in learning best when they are working in groups. Embodying the essence of a team player, interpersonal learners absorb knowledge best when they are working along with others. They are also gifted at reading the emotions and expressions of other people. They are also skilled in knowing the dynamics of various relationships.

For better social learning, do the following:

  • Use role-playing scenarios and acting out scenes.
  • Share knowledge with others and teach them what you have learned.
  • Take part in exchange programs.
  • Join a service or volunteering community.
  1. Intrapersonal

Also known as solitary learning, this refers to individuals who thrive more when they are studying alone. These persons are inclined and in touch with their own feelings, skills, abilities, and the essence of who they are. These learners are independent, and they prefer self-reflection and self-management.

For better intrapersonal learning, do the following:

  • Provide a learning log or a study journal.
  • Find a quiet place for studying on your own.
  • Establish personal goals and reward yourself for achievements.
  1. Kinesthetic

Physical learners love movement, and they learn better if they have something to do with their hands. Usually, they learn best when they are creating artwork and utilizing space where they can read, write, paint, and design. To retain things to their mind, kinesthetic learners tend to pace around the room.

For better kinesthetic learning, do the following:

  • Play mime games and use role-playing.
  • Turn basic lessons into art projects.
  • Review and recite while doing physical activities or exercise.

Final Thoughts

Learning styles show that every person has a particular mix of methods where they perform better at. Using multiple learning styles and appreciating the multiple intelligences is a relatively new yet very promising educational approach. This method creates a positive spiral that will remove the notion of being stupid, weak, or dumb. Giving students access to the learning styles suited for them, they will be allowed to use better techniques that will lift their quality of learning.
